The DAAD Centre for International Academic Collaborations (KIWi) is expanding its events portfolio with matchmaking events and is now focusing on German-Iraqi collaboration opportunities in the field of water resources management.
With this moderated matchmaking event, KIWi, the DAAD Office Amman and the DAAD Information Point Erbil aim to bring together HEI representatives from Germany and Iraq, as well as representatives of research institutions (including directors, researchers, science managers, international offices, research departments, training hospitals, and transfer offices) active in the field of water resources management who are interested in setting up links and exchanging ideas on possible collaborations.
Iraqi and German HEI are cooperating successfully in already over 50 partnerships on a wide spectrum of subject areas and research topics. Scientific cooperation can be expected to intensify further.
Water is indispensable for human survival, an essential component of ecosystems and cultural landscapes, and serves as a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Thoughtful management, efficient conservation, and sustainable utilization of water are crucial prerequisites for safeguarding biodiversity and preserving ecosystems. Access to clean water and sanitation is fundamental for sustainable development, with universal access being one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targeted for achievement by 2030.
The impacts of climate change are being felt globally, manifesting in extreme weather events that pose threats to nature, agriculture, industrial production, and public health. This necessitates exploration of alternative management strategies. The responsible utilization of water as a precious resource assumes a central role in addressing these challenges, not only in regions facing water scarcity but also on a worldwide scale, including nations like Germany and Iraq.
Issues concerning water supply, distribution, and rational utilization have long been important, but are now increasingly critical against the backdrop of climate change. Collaboration on areas such as curriculum development, educational and research activities, and knowledge transfer holds significant value for institutions in both countries. Incorporating international and intercultural perspectives into approaches for water resource management and climate resilience enriches the efforts of all partner institutions.
The event will start at 10 am German time and the estimated duration will be 3.5 to 4 hours.
The first part will focus on the significance and challenges in the field of water resources management in Germany and Iraq, which will be outlined through presentations by Prof. Dr Lars Ribbe (TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences) and Prof. Dr Jehan M. Sheikh Suleimany (Salahaddin University Erbil).
The main part of the event offers Matchmaking sessions to introduce the participants to potential partner institutions and to provide a platform to discuss collaboration opportunities.
A summary and the presentation of funding opportunities offered by the DAAD will conclude the event.
Questions that could be discussed during this event and will facilitate a first exchange and getting to know each other are:
